Arrowhead Blood Bank

In January of 2006, several of the members of Arrowhead Power Squadron received a request from Dr. Gilbert P. Moe, MD, a 38 year member of the squadron, who had served as commander of the squadron in 1992, to donate two or three units of blood for his wife, Joyce Moe, who was to undergo surgery within a few days. The surgeon had said that he wanted fresh whole blood available if it became necessary for a transfusion. Several members stepped forward and made the necessary donations. It was fortunate that they were not needed and therefore were donated to the San Bernardino-Riverside County Blood Bank.

A Past Commander who had served on other Blood Banks suggested to the incoming commander, Richard Nachman, SN, that the squadron should take steps to form its Blood Bank. He and Lt/C Raymond A. Edwards, AP, made contact with the above Blood Bank, and a Squadron Blood Bank was established. Based on the size of our membership, it was agreed that we would, within the next 12 months, solicit our members to donate a total of 32 units of whole blood. We reached this number in just over 10 months.

As a result of having an up and running Squadron Blood Bank, a member of the squadron, and any member of his or her immediate family, who requires blood will receive same at no cost. There is no limit on the amount of blood that is available to that person. All that is required is that the member notify the Chairman of the Squadron's Blood Bank, giving the name of the patient and the hospital where that patient is and the necessary information will be submitted to the San Bernardino-Riverside County Blood Bank, and it will be available. It takes just about one hour to make a donation, and those who are doing so are asked to tell the person taking the necessary information that the blood should be credited to The Arrowhead Power Squadron. There are five separate locations in San Bernardino & Riverside County where blood can be donated.

If you are one who, for any number of reasons, can't donate blood, you can still participate. Rather than give the Gift of Life, you can give a Financial Gift that will be equally effective.
